Position Description: Resources Developer


Tri-Valley CAREs (Communities Against a Radioactive Environment) is seeking an energetic, committed individual to work directly with the Executive Director on development tasks critical to the organization's continued growth

THE ORGANIZATION:

Tri-Valley CAREs (Livermore, CA) was founded in 1983 by area residents concerned about the nuclear weapons programs and environmental pollution at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, a U.S. Department of Energy facility whose mission since 1952 has been to design and test nuclear weapons. Tri-Valley CAREs is the primary community group monitoring Livermore Lab activities. Tri-Valley CAREs also participates in several coalitions of groups that share similar goals of peace, justice and a healthy environment. Tri-Valley CAREs has been a member of the nation-wide Alliance for Nuclear Accountability since 1989, and is a co-founding member of the Abolition 2000 global network for the elimination of nuclear weapons, the U.S. Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons and the Back From the Brink campaign to get nuclear weapons taken off hair-trigger alert.

JOB STATEMENT:

Working as an independent contractor, under the supervision of the Executive Director, perform resource development and related duties critical to the success and ongoing growth of the organization.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Fundraising

(These are the core tasks to be fulfilled by the successful candidate whether full or part-time)

  1. Foundation and other grants. Makes initial contacts, drafts proposals, manages grants, and performs follow up (e.g., progress reports to foundations).
  2. Direct mail and follow up. Writes (or solicits from a Tri-Valley CAREs member) bi-annual fundraising letters, coordinates the mailing with other members and volunteers, and spearheads follow up (e.g., thank-you letters or phone banking).
  3. Major donor campaign and follow up. Conducts a major donor recruitment campaign with the help of Tri-Valley CAREs members and volunteers. Manages the overall campaign (e.g., writing letters, scheduling meetings, participating in meetings with other group members).
  4. Case Statement. Responsible for periodically updating the organization's case statement; will assist other members in extracting parts for projects (e.g., updating a brochure, preparing a new "welcome to Tri-Valley CAREs" packet).

Other

(These are outreach-oriented tasks to be undertaken by the successful full-time candidate)

  1. Speakers Bureau Coordination: Makes calls to set up speaking engagements (e.g. classrooms, church groups, service orgs); coordinates activities with Community Organizer to expand existing speakers bureau and helps schedule members and volunteers to fill speaking engagements; sets up speakers trainings as needed.
  2. Assists with other outreach tasks as mutually agreed upon.
  3. Attends Tri-Valley CAREs' meetings on a regular basis (e.g., bimonthly).
  4. Occasionally represents the organization at public functions.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

  1. Experience with fundraising, donor development and volunteer coordination in a nonprofit setting
  2. Excellent writing and communications skills
  3. Attention to details, ability to plan for and meet deadlines
  4. Familiarity with computer systems and software, especially Filemaker Pro for basic database operations.
  5. Strong commitment to peace and the environment
  6. Knowledge of nuclear issues helpful, but willingness to learn the basics essential
  7. Need to have access to a car, e.g., to attend meetings with foundation funders and major donors, occasional events

OTHER:

  1. Position can be full or part-time, and is classified as a Contractor.
  2. Pay is dependent upon experience, but will be in the $20/hour range.
  3. Work may be conducted from Resource Developer's own home office; however, computer and other equipment in Tri-Valley CAREs' offices may be used on occasion.
  4. Position occasionally involves climbing stairs to Tri-Valley CAREs' offices, located on the top floor of a Victorian-style building.
  5. Resources Developer will meet with Executive Director in Livermore office at least once a week.
