Position Description: Program Associate


Tri-Valley CAREs (Communities Against a Radioactive Environment) is seeking a personable, dedicated individual to work directly with the Executive Director on research, analysis, writing and public education tasks in support of the organization's programs. In general, program topics involve nuclear weapons policy, nuclear waste, environmental pollution and health impacts.

THE ORGANIZATION:

Tri-Valley CAREs (Livermore, CA) was founded in 1983 by area residents concerned about the nuclear weapons programs and environmental pollution at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, a U.S. Department of Energy facility whose mission since 1952 has been to design and test nuclear weapons. Tri-Valley CAREs is the primary community group monitoring Livermore Lab activities. Tri-Valley CAREs also participates in several coalitions of groups that share similar goals of peace, justice and a healthy environment. Tri-Valley CAREs has been a member of the nation-wide Alliance for Nuclear Accountability since 1989, and is a co-founding member of the Abolition 2000 global network for the elimination of nuclear weapons, the U.S. Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons and the Back From the Brink campaign to get nuclear weapons taken off hair-trigger alert.

JOB STATEMENT:

Working under the supervision of the Executive Director, perform research, analysis, writing and public education duties on select nuclear weapons and waste topics in support of the organization's program goals. Tri-Valley CAREs' 2000/2001 programs include: (1) redefining the Department of Energy's so-called "Stockpile Stewardship" program in order to prevent the design and development of new nuclear weapons; (2) stopping the National Ignition Facility, a nuclear weapons research facility under construction at Livermore Lab; (3) investigating the potential impacts of nuclear activities on community health; (4) promoting cleanup of radioactive and toxic pollutants at Livermore Lab; and, (5) safeguarding the community from future contamination.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS FOR PROGRAM ASSOCIATE:

  1. Assist in monitoring activities at Livermore Lab, and throughout the weapons complex.
  2. Conduct research on select topics involving nuclear weapons and waste issues.
  3. Complete comments, memoranda, articles, reports and other written materials as needed.
  4. Create and disseminate select public education materials.
  5. Mail, phone, fax and/or e-mail information to various audiences and networks.
  6. Share results of research on Tri-Valley CAREs' behalf at select public events.
  7. Participate in meetings with Livermore Lab staff, regulatory officials and other decision-makers (e.g., quarterly meetings to discuss cleanup at the Livermore Lab).
  8. Participate in meetings of Tri-Valley CAREs membership and select, additional non-governmental organizations (e.g., represent Tri-Valley CAREs in the U.S. Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, the Livermore Conversion Project).
  9. Meet with Tri-Valley CAREs' Executive Director regularly for supervision of the work and evaluation of the products.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

  1. Strong writing, communication and public speaking skills.
  2. Experience conducting basic research and policy analysis, on nuclear issues or in a related environmental or health field.
  3. Familiarity with the nuclear weapons cycle, or other environmental or policy issues.
  4. Ability to represent Tri-Valley CAREs in diverse forums.
  5. A demonstrated commitment to peace and the environment.
  6. Attention to details, ability to complete projects independently.
  7. Familiarity with PC and/or Macintosh software, such as Word, Pagemaker, etc.
  8. Have access to a car for travel to occasional speaking engagements, meetings, etc.

OTHER INFORMATION:

  1. Position can be full-time or three quarter-time for the right candidate, full-time preferred.
  2. Position is a staff position with the organization, and is classified as hourly.
  3. Pay is dependent upon experience, but will be in the range of $15/hour.
  4. Position may involve light physical tasks, such as lifting bank boxes of documents, climbing stairs to the offices on the second floor, etc.
