LIVERMORE (BCN) 04-08-06

Kelley said her organization will closely monitor the removal effort.

Group wants lab toxins containment plan to go further

ALTAMONT HILLS: In proposal, trench would be built around Superfund site that leaks pollutants CONTRA COSTA TIMES--Posted on Tuesday, April 4, 2006

?Pit 7 is now a Superfund site, qualifying for federal cleanup dollars?Marylia Kelley, executive director of the Livermore-based Tri-Valley Communities Against a Radioactive Environment watchdog group, said the plan is fine -- as far as it goes?"But that alone probably will not stop the migration of the contamination plume that's already there," said Kelley, whose group wants "French drain" trenches not only above Pit 7, but at elevations below it to further capture water already contaminated.

A most unclean site

TRACY PRESS ? Phil Hayworth ? April 6, 2006

?some who attended the meeting weren?t convinced that the government was willing to do the right thing. ?They want to go cheap and mitigate the contamination by pumping out and treating the water,? said Bob Sarvey, a Tracy businessman and member of the Tri-Valley CAREs board, a Livermore-based environmental advocacy group. ?The only way to truly rid the area of contamination,? Sarvey said, ?is to spend the money, excavate the area and get rid of everything.?

Microbe labs proposed for California

UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL May 29, 2006, 14:04 GMT?UPI, United Kingdom

LIVERMORE, CA, United States (UPI) -- Opponents of the laboratories say research centers that study fatal diseases should not be located near a high population center like San Francisco? Stephan Volker, an Oakland attorney representing Tri-Valley CARES of Livermore, warned that an earthquake could 'unleash billions of deadly pathogens, for which there is no known cure.'

Livermore considers bio-defense lab in Tracy

Proposed research site might store deadly human diseases

SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE- Keay Davidson, San Francisco Chronicle Science Writer, Sunday, May 28, 2006

?Critics say approval might allow such a facility to be a storehouse and research center for particularly virulent diseases such as Ebola, dengue fever, Lassa, fever and other illnesses for which there are no known cures. "To propose location of (such a potentially hazardous) facility in the San Francisco Bay Area is truly beyond comprehension, because all it would take is a single earthquake to unleash billions of deadly pathogens, for which there is no known cure, on an unsuspecting public," said Oakland attorney Stephan Volker, whose client Tri-Valley CARES of Livermore, a leading activist group and lab critic, has already sued over the first bio-defense lab -- and might take legal action over the second proposal.

Judge to hear concerns over proposal for biowarfare lab

San Jose Mercury News, June 6, 2006

A federal judge will consider Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's plans to build a new ``hotlab'' to study anthrax, plague and other deadly pathogens. The hearing, scheduled for next Tuesday in the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco, is the latest development in a battle over the ``Biosafety Level 3'' facility. Livermore-based Tri-Valley Communities Against a Radioactive Environment and other watchdog groups claim the Department of Energy didn't do an adequate assessment of the potential environmental effects of locating such a facility in Livermore. ``It is outrageous'' that the Energy Department ``granted itself the go-ahead to operate this facility without conducting thorough analyses of the risks to workers and neighbors,'' said Marylia Kelley, executive director of the Tri-Valley group.
