We are currently looking for a new Development Director and a new Outreach Director

Outreach Director

You can make a difference in the world. Tri-Valley CAREs seeks a knowledgeable Outreach Director to lead local, regional and youth related outreach programs. The Outreach Director is responsible for planning and implementing a multi-layered program to increase the organization's membership, public profile and political effectiveness. Major responsibilities include web-based outreach, event planning (e.g., vigils, rallies), speaking in diverse venues and volunteer management. The Outreach Director reports directly to the Executive Director.

Tri-Valley CAREs' outreach begins locally and expands outward to include key communities as described below.

Outreach Director: Scope of Work / Responsibilities

1. Electronic outreach, including email lists and web site.

  • Develop, enhance and segment electronic email lists for outreach.
  • Send alerts, calendar items and other material to electronic lists.
  • Work with Executive Director to ensure Tri-Valley CAREs maintains the appropriate level of electronic outreach capacity.
  • Post materials to the group's web site; conduct routine maintenance.
  • Develop strategies to increase "traffic" on Tri-Valley CAREs' web site.
  • As needed, reorganize and upgrade the web site.

2. Other methods of outreach/related activities.

  • Create and implement youth outreach and involvement programs, including by representing Tri-Valley CAREs in the Coalition to Demilitarize the University of Calif. and other student and youth led networks on nuclear weapons issues.
  • Conduct high school, college, and related local and regional outreach.
  • Liaison with established public interest organizations and form or participate in coalitions to meet Tri-Valley CAREs' strategic goals.
  • Plan, organize and publicize the group's events, including by:
    - ensuring events serve Tri-Valley CAREs' goals and programs,
    - creating outreach plans to involve other groups, constituencies
    and/or individuals, and implementing same, - tending to the details and logistics as appropriate,
    - conducting media outreach, including press releases and publicity materials, doing interviews and arranging interviews for other speakers,
    - creating materials to publicize the events, such as fliers, posters, fact sheets, newsletter articles, letters to the editor, op-eds, etc.
  • Represent Tri-Valley CAREs at community and other events, including speaking on the group's behalf. Also, set up engagements for Tri-Valley CAREs' speakers bureau.
  • Expand membership and participation in Tri-Valley CAREs' activities, including by:
    - presenting "how to" training for members to support program work (e.g., how to do public speaking, write letters to the editor).
    - increasing participation in monthly meetings, mailing parties, etc.
    - developing local and Bay Area support for Tri-Valley CAREs' programs.
  • Assist with staffing office, greeting visitors, answering phones, drafting business letters and other general office and organizing tasks upon request.

3. Program/research/writing/advocacy activities.

  • Conduct research and analysis on nuclear weapons programs and policy.
  • Create fact sheets, fliers, newsletter articles, magazine articles, press releases, reports and other materials. produced.
  • Disseminate materials via the web, speaking engagements, etc., including by communicating with staff to ensure maximum use and utility of materials produced.
  • Conduct advocacy on key issues, including through participation in events like "DC Days," and "Review Conferences" of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty by mutual agreement with the Executive Director.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum two years of progressively more responsible outreach or organizing experience with a non-profit, advocacy or community-based organization.
  • Passion for peace, justice and the environment; knowledge of nuclear weapons issues a plus.
  • Exceptional communications skills, both oral and written.
  • Excellent computer skills, including Internet, layout and database programs.
  • Highly skilled in prioritizing diverse tasks and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as well as independently on specified projects.
  • Must have a car.

Hours: Position can be 32 hours/week or full-time, 40/hrs/week.

Salary: $16 per hour to start, with generous health and dental benefits, paid vacation and some paid holidays.

Development Director

Tri-Valley CAREs (Communities Against a Radioactive Environment) is one of the nation's premier nuclear "watchdog" organizations. The group monitors the U.S. nuclear weapons complex, with a special focus on the nearby Livermore Lab. Tri-Valley CAREs has a 25 year history of influencing nuclear policy and protecting the environment through research, public education, political advocacy, litigation and other proven methods. The organization is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit located in the San Francisco Bay Area community of Livermore, with a staff of five, an active board of 12, a membership of 5,600 and an annual operating budget of $375,000.  

You can make a difference in the world. Tri-Valley CAREs seeks a knowledgeable development professional to lead and manage its fundraising programs. The Development Director is responsible for planning, implementing and directing a comprehensive multi-year fundraising plan, including foundation and government grants, major gifts, special events and individual donor appeals. The Development Director reports directly to the Executive Director, collaborates with the board, and supervises the development-related activities of the office manager, database coordinator, bookkeeper and contractor staff.

Responsibilities

  • Create strategic fundraising plan and manage activities to meet goals.
  • Prepare annual fundraising budget and calendar.
  • Identify prospective foundation, government and select corporate sources of support; write and submit LOI's, grants and reports.
  • Identify, cultivate and steward major donors and prospects.
  • Produce two individual donor appeal mailings per year; supervise follow up.
  • Develop and implement plan for internet gifts outreach.
  • Coordinate one fundraising event annually.
  • Monitor income and expenses; prepare quarterly reports.
  • Manage the day to day development operations; supervise and evaluate development-related staff and contractors.
  • Guide and assist board members in carrying out fundraising responsibilities.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2-3 years progressively more responsible experience in fundraising with an emphasis on grant writing, major gifts and events, preferably with a community-based or advocacy non-profit.
  • Proven track record of personally identifying, cultivating and soliciting foundation grants and significant gifts from individual donors.
  • Exceptional communication, writing and organizational skills; detail oriented.
  • Highly skilled in prioritizing diverse tasks and meeting deadlines.
  • Maintains flexibility; working independently in some areas and with a team in others.
  • Proficient computer skills required, including donor segmentation of databases, FileMaker Pro, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and desktop publishing programs (e.g., InDesign).
  • Essential email and internet skills required; html and web design skills are a plus.
  • Commitment to the mission and goals of Tri-Valley CAREs.
  • A Bachelor's or Masters Degree in a relevant field (e.g., Non-Profit Management), or equivalent professional experience in the work force.
