Last week Tri-Valley CAREs went to Livermore Lab, where warheads are developed, to celebrate the first anniversary of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. We rang bells and thanked each of the 59 countries that ratified the treaty and the dozens more undertaking the process.
I was heartened to see countries meet their responsibility under the 1970 Non-Proliferation Treaty to pursue effective measures on disarmament through the treaty. The treaty bans the development, testing, production, manufacture, acquisition, possession, stockpiling, transfer, stationing, installation and use or threatened use of nuclear weapons.
We celebrated with banners proclaiming, “Nuclear Weapons are Illegal.” We chanted, “United States sign the treaty!” Countries that joined the treaty inspire me. They include nations of various sizes and traditions from Europe, Latin America, Africa, Asia, Island nations and beyond.
Abolition of these terrible weapons is the goal of the world.
